Coco Martin says he can relate to his role as Tonyong Bayawak!

Coco Martin admitted that his role in Agimat: Ang Mga Alamat ni Ramon Revilla Sr. Presents Tonyong Bayawak requires a big adjustment for him as an actor. From doing heavy drama scenes in his previous projects, he now executes action sequences. Given Tonyong Bayawak’s storyline, Coco says he has prepared himself for everything that will be required of him and he is looking forward to the show reaping good results. “Nakaka-six taping days na kami, I think seven days pa kumpleto na. Sana talaga magkaroon ng bunga lahat ng mga pinaghihirapan namin, sana magdere-derecho ‘yung mga magagandang ratings na nakakamit ng series na Agimat.”

Coco Martin admits Tonyong Bayawak is a different kind of challenge for him!

While Coco Martin is proud to have been chosen to play Tonyong Bayawak, he admitted that he is also nervous since Gerald Anderson and Jolo Revilla were so successful in their respective chapters of Agimat: Ang Mga Alamat ni Ramon Revilla Sr. “Ako medyo nagwo-worry ako kasi after ni Gerald, successful ‘yung Tiagong Akyat, then si Jolo, Pepeng Agimat, eh ako yung susunod. Sana tangkilikin din siya ng mga tao. Ako naman gusto ko kahit papaano hindi man sila (Tiagong Akyat and Pepeng Agimat) mapantayan, huwag lang sobrang baba kasi nahihiya naman ako sa management ‘pag hindi siya pumick up,” said Coco.

Coco Martin says he will remain an indie actor despite his TV success

Coco Martin may have finally gotten his wish to penetrate TV mainstream, but clarified that he will remain an indie actor. Even with a busy schedule due to upcoming TV projects, Coco said that he will find time for an indie project if he is offered a good role. “If ever may magandang proyekto at alam kong maayos ang mga katrabaho ko, never kong hihindian ‘yan. Hangga’t makakakaya ko at maisisingit ko sa schedule ko, gagawin at gagawin ko,” he said.

Coco justified that while mainstream projects give him the chance to save up and enjoy popularity, acting in indie films gives him fulfillment as an actor. “Kumbaga hindi mo ito ginagawa for the sake na kumita ka, ginagawa mo ito dahil gusto mo ang trabahong ito at nirerespeto mo ‘yung propesyon mo,” he shared.

He also pointed out that if it were not for his being an indie actor, his acting skills may not have been noticed and he may not have penetrated the mainstream at all. As he put it, “Dala ng mga karanasan ko kung saan ako nanggaling, kumbaga malalim ang pinaghuhugutan ko. Malalim ‘yung karanasan ko kaya siguro para sa akin mas naa-appreciate ng mga manonood kung anuman ‘yung trabahong pinagpapaguran ko.”

Coco shared that his work an actor in TV and in indie films allows him versatility as a performer, something which he considers his advantage over other actors. “Siguro para sa akin ito na ‘yung time para makapag-adjust kasi iba naman ang indie at mainstream. Ito ‘yung blessings at ayoko namang tanggihan,” he shared. “Basta lagi ko na lang iniisip na dapat pagbutihan ko kasi baka mamaya ito na ‘yung last ko eh.”

While he might have a younger audience for his TV projects, Coco projects a bolder image in indie films. “Para sa akin magkaiba ang audience ng TV atsaka movie, lalo na sa indie,” he justified. “Parang ayoko namang mag-set ng limitations, eh. Kapag inisip ko kasi ‘yon ako ang maaapektuhan as an actor. Maaapektuhan at mag-iiba ang trabaho ko.”

After being part of the successful teleserye Tayong Dalawa, Coco is busy taping for Agimat: Mga Alamat ni Ramon Revilla, reprising the role of Tonyong Bayawak and for Nagsimula sa Puso as Maja Salvador.
