GMA, Jessica win awards from Reader's Digest!

For the second year in a row, GMA Network, Inc. has been chosen as one of the most trusted brands in Asia in a consumer survey conducted by Reader’s Digest Asia. It received the Gold Award in the Television Category.

Jessica Soho was also named as the most trusted news presenter in the Philippines for 2011.

GMA AVP for Corporate Affairs Teresa Pacis received the award on behalf of the network during the awarding ceremony held June 2 at the Resorts World Hotel in Manila.

“GMA is proud to be recognized by Reader’s Digest Asia and its readers for the second time around. This citation inspires us even more to continue providing balanced programming — top quality entertainment shows and credible news and information programs. More importantly, we will keep on implementing CSR programs that contribute to making the lives of each and every Filipino better,” Pacis said.

This is also the second year that Jessica was ranked highly in Reader’s Digest consumer survey.

Last year, she was the third most trusted Filipino after humanitarian Rosa Rosal and Lea Salonga who were ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

“I am both proud and humbled to be receiving this recognition from the one magazine that has nurtured my love of reading when I was growing up. I wish more of our young people pick up the habit as well. I also want to share this award with everyone in our News and Public Affairs organization, past and present, who has helped me get to where I am now. It is both a big honor and responsibility for me to be named as the country’s most trusted news presenter,” Soho said.

The Gold Trusted Brand Award reflects the Asian consumers’ choice of the most trusted brands in the market. The competing brands were rated based on trustworthiness, credibility, quality, value, understanding of customer needs, ability to innovate and social responsibility.

KC, Sam team up for 1st movie in Forever and a Day!

Noted for her landmark romance-comedy-drama movies, director Cathy Garcia-Molina confessed that after watching KC Concepcion in several of her movies and TV shows, she looked forward to working with KC.

It’s not the same with Sam Milby whom Cathy has directed in three movies.

Cathy has realized dream of putting together KC and Sam in a movie, Star Cinema’s Forever and a Day, which opens in more than 100 theaters nationwide on June 15.

KC plays Raffy, a girl who has gone through a lot in life but dares to try many more things to prove to herself (and not so much to other people) that “she can.”

Sam plays Eugene, an arrogant go-getter who is always up for any challenge, “always hungry to be the best.”

Cathy said that before the shoot started, she laid her cards on the table and told KC, “I’ll do everything para mailabas mo kung anong kayang mo pang ilabas. KC didn’t disappoint me. In fact, I was surprised because I got more than what I expected. Magaling siya; matalino siyang artista. She improved everytime I corrected her. She’s a revelation in this movie.”

Again with Sam, it’s a different story.

“Sam is a kid at heart,” said Cathy. “He’s playful, magaan ka-trabaho. Once he gets into the character, siyang-siya na ‘yon. As Eugene, Sam sheds his matinee-idol persona; he’s a far cry from his drool-worthy leading-man look in his previous movies. I would say that he has greatly improved since the first time I worked with him.”

The movie was partly shot in the scenic spots of Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro. KC and Sam proved to be real pros all the way, not at all complaining when they were asked to do extreme-adventure sports or games such as zipline, zorb and white-water rafting.

KC admitted that at first, she was “afraid” of Cathy.

“I was relieved when she told me that all she was expecting from me was to trust her,” said KC, “and I did.”

Of course, as usual Sam is all praises for Cathy.

“I’m comfortable working with her,” said Sam, “and even before the current project is finished, I’m already looking forward to the next one.”

GMA 7 Afternoon Shows Perform Strongly in May 2011!

For the first five months of 2011, GMA Network secured the top spot on the national ratings chart, according to data from the industry's widely trusted ratings service provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

Based on household data recorded in National Urban Philippines for the period January to May 31 (May 22 to 31 based on overnight readings), GMA garnered a 33.1 percent average, ahead of ABS-CBN's 31.9 and TV5's 15.2.

For May, GMA finished with 31 household share points - a competitive record driven by the Network's strong performance in the afternoon block (12nn to 6pm) with 37.8 percent of the country's viewing population attuned to GMA programs; as against ABS-CBN's 26.6 percent.

GMA likewise aired the highest rated television special billed World Welterweight Championship The Pacquiao-Mosley boxing special, which landed on the top spot of overall top 30 programs nationwide. The bout, which aired May 8, recorded 61.9 household share points, skyrocketing to 77.2 share points during the actual fight.

The television trend also covered another key area, Total Urban Luzon, which makes up 77 percent of total television households nationwide. For the period January to May 31, GMA cornered 36.6 percent of the viewing household population in the said area, against ABS-CBN's 27 points and TV5's 16.9.

For May, GMA garnered 34.6 share points, bigger than ABS-CBN's share of 28.2 points and TV5's 17 points.

Including specials, there were 17 GMA programs in the list of overall top 30 programs in Urban Luzon this May. The Pacquiao-Mosley bout affixed its rank on the number one spot with 62.3 household share points.

In Mega Manila, an area particularly important to the market as it comprises the bulk of the country's total television household population at 58 percent, GMA convincingly stood out among competitors with 37.6 household share points from January to May, higher by double digits than ABS-CBN's 25.4 and TV5's 17.7 share points.

For May, GMA scored 35.6 share points, way ahead of ABS-CBN's 26.7 and TV5's 17.9 points.

In the list of overall top 30 programs with specials in Mega Manila, 19 were from GMA. The Pacquiao-Mosley bout was at number one with 62.8 household share points, followed by the newly launched epicserye Amaya, starring GMA primetime queen Marian Rivera, which garnered 35.8 household share points.

Other GMA programs which launched in May, namely, Blusang Itim (starring Kylie Padilla), Andres de Saya (starring Cesar Montano and Iza Calzado), and Sisid (starring Jackie Rice), were all ratings winners relative to counterpart programs from ABS-CBN.

Blusang Itim premiered with 41.3 share points, almost double Summer Power's 22.6; Andres de Saya scored 32.8 household share points, higher than Wansapantaym's 22.4; while Sisid garnered 35.8 points, much higher than Frijolito's 18.9 share points.

The Nielsen TV Audience Measurement used by GMA is used by 21 companies including two other local networks, namely, TV5 and Solar Entertainment; Faulkner Media; CBN Asia; 13 advertising agencies and three regional clients. On the other hand, ABS-CBN is the only local major TV network reportedly subscribing to Kantar Media, formerly known as TNS.

In Mega Manila alone, the Nielsen TV Audience Measurement has a sample size of 880 homes as compared to Kantar Media's 770 homes. Nationwide, Nielsen has a total sample size of 2,005 homes compared to the lower sample size of 1,370 utilized by Kantar Media.

HS grad is Wil Time Bigtime's first mega winner!

Joseph “Nonoy” Murillo could not help but burst into tears when host Willie Revillame announced that he answered the mega jackpot question correctly.

“Ma, hindi ko alam ang sagot [Mom, I didn’t know the answer, I just guessed],” Nonoy confessed while his mother tried to hold him up to accept his prizes including P1 million cash, a Foton van and a house and lot from Camella Homes.

He sets the record as the first to win the mega jackpot last May 26 (Thursday), just 12 days after Wil Time Bigtime was launched last May 14, with more exciting features, bigger prizes, and state-of-the-art sets, notably an LED floor.

"Ganyan kasimple ang buhay, dapat lumalaban gaya ni Nonoy [That’s life’s simple lesson: one must fight on, like Nonoy],” Willie told the audience after handing Nonoy a P1-million mock check (facsimile of a bank cheque).

The 20-year old gardener and service crew from Paranaque City is a fighter, indeed. Despite his age and lack of money, Nonoy was able to support his education while providing for his family at the same time.

"Mataas na ang edad ko pero sinikap ko pa rin po makatapos ng hayskul sa pamamagitan ng pag-woworking student [Even though I was quite old for my school level, I struggled to finish high school by being a working student],” he said in an interview with TV5 newscast AKSYON.

Nonoy graduated from high school last March and plans to pursue a college degree using a portion of his cash prize. He also plans to juggle work and school to support the education of his five siblings.

Earlier in the game, Nonoy was ecstatic after making it to the “Wil Time Bigtime” segment. “Napakalaking karangalan po sa amin na makasama sa nag-iisang programang itong nagbibigay ng pag-asa sa’ming mahihirap [It’s such a big honor for us to join this program with the singular goal of providing hope to the poor],” he said.

Nonoy made it to the “Mega Jackpot” round after he finished the mind-challenging game “Step In, Step Out.” For the final question, Willie asked,“Sa listahan ng PAGASA ng mga bagyo ngayong 2011, ano ang magiging pangalan ng panlimang bagyo?” to which Nonoy rightly guessed, “[Letter] C. Egay.”

The people’s show continues to serve family-oriented entertainment with bits of inspiring stories for its millions of viewers every night (Monday to Friday) at 6:30 p.m. and on Saturdays at 5 p.m. only on TV5.

Romance and action in Guns and Roses!

ABS-CBN proudly launches another original teleserye that will bring a different twist to your primetime viewing experience Guns and Roses.

The project unites the most sought-after stars on Philippine primetime. Topbilled by Robin Padilla in his comeback as a Kapamilya. Guns and Roses also brings back Bea Alonzo to the primetime block as Robin’s leading lady.

In addition, the latest romance-action series also features Diether Ocampo in an offbeat role that will further stamp his mark as one of the versatile actors of today. Adding up to the love story angle is the PBB Teen Edition Plus grand winner Ejay Falcon and the Empress of Drama, Empress.

Is love enough to heal wounds? This is the basic but exciting premise the project holds. Guns and Roses is a story of a man named Abel Marasigan (Padilla), whose past is riddled with pain and anger back when he was still 10 years old. Out of justice and shaped by revenge, he will be forced to leave his family to kill the people behind the death of his father. As the story goes on, he will meet Reign Santana (Alonzo), a woman who just lost her fiancée in a seemingly incidental shooting. Both lonely hearts intertwine as their stories of broken family and estranged hearts fuse.

However, one man stands between them, agent of law Marcus Aguilar (Ocampo) who is the one responsible for Reign’s case. Unexpectedly, as the story unravels, he will fall in love with Reign. There will be more twists and turns as the story unfolds. In spite of the inconvenient truth, Abel and Reign will fight for their love no matter how complicated the situation may be.

The full trailer gave a very interesting glimpse on the story of the much-anticipated teleserye. Evident enough, Guns and Roses is capable of giving an exciting twist to the usual soaps aired primetime. Furthermore, the series houses a casting coup led by Mark Gil, Pen Medina, Liza Lorena, Isabel Rivas, Nanding Josef, Pinky Amador, Gladys Reyes, Ketchup Eusebio, Justin Cuyugan, Ina Feleo, Boom Labruska, Maliksi Morales with the special participation of Jake Cuenca.

Directed by Trina Dayrit and Rechie del Carmen, Guns And Roses will hit the household screens every weeknights starting June 6 on ABS-CBN Primetime Bida.

Mega umamin sa midlife crisis, 'I was very angry. And I lost all desire to look good'

“I had a midlife crisis. I was very angry. ‘Cause I was everybody’s sweetheart all of a sudden I turned a year older, everybody changed. And I lost all desire to look good,” matapang niyang pag-amin.

Ngunit pagkatapos daw niyang makita ang determinasyon ng 14 na harapin ang katotohanan at maging seryoso sa pagpapapayat, nagbalik daw ang tiwala niya sa sarili na magsimula ng pagbabago.

Thank you for making me feel this.

Sabi ni Wilbur Ryan Serrano sa official Twitter account ng programa, “I feel ‘yung sincerity ni #sharoncuneta sa mga @BLPinoyEdition ..if theres a will.. there’s a way...go go go!!”
